Slow Food in the Canteen: a European School Network

Slow Food's vision of what daily food should be.

With the opening of the 2009/2010 academic year, Slow Food International has launched a new initiative 'Slow Food in the Canteen: A European School Network'. The project has already started in nine schools in eight countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Northern Ireland (UK) and Romania, and is looking to grow to include at least one school from each European country by March 2010.
Look at the map, to see our new countries.

Each school should be linked to a local convivium. All schools will receive a copy of Slow Food’s sensory education kit, 'To the Origins of Taste' to promote taste education activities that encourage greater knowledge and understanding of food, how it tastes, where it comes from, and how it is produced. The schools will also aim to improve the quality and sustainability of their meal services by evaluating canteen and food management, procurement, conservation, preparation, service and waste.

SLOW FOOD IN THE CANTEEN

So the next phase is starting .... the local meetings from November 2010 til April 2011, we will put into practice the lessons which have been learned from the project - maximise on the network and apply it to our local area. The objective of the local meeting is to invite those who can make decisions in our schools to come together and pledge to make a change, a stance for quality food, a decision to have a school garden, farm visits, start working with producers to source local foods, to have traditional dishes in the canteen, to promote traditional fare in the canteen.

This is a very exciting step and we would like to hear your thoughts, including advice  ..if you have already had your meeting

Lets keep talking,

Sarah

Slow Food Turda - Local Networking meeting!

Hi from a very cold Turda, Romania,

I have been here for the guts of a week to represent Slow Food International at the local networking meeting. It has been a wonderful experience and eye opening to the former socialist states and their challenges in terms of changing behaviour around food sourcing.

We are currently entering in my mind the most important phase of the 'European Schools for Healthy Food' project, the local networking meetings. Directly following Terra Madre, we…
